Sergey Tokarev: EdEra and Tokarev Foundation launch the BigMat platform
Ukrainian online education studio EdEra, with the support of Tokarev Foundation, has launched BigMat, a free digital platform where users can find simple answers to complex mathematical questions. Topics are explored through interactive exercises, practical activities, and real-life examples. Sergey Tokarev, an IT entrepreneur, investor and founder of Tokarev Foundation, spoke about the platform for students, parents and teachers.
Why this approach to learning math is relevant
Following the 2025 National Multi-Subject Test (NMT), it became clear that Ukrainian pupils need help with math: 12% of school graduates failed to meet the threshold in the mathematics section. To understand the reasons behind this, online education studio EdEra, together with Tokarev Foundation, investigated learning losses. They found that gaps in knowledge mostly begin to form in secondary school.
In addition, EdEra analysed the phenomenon of math anxiety, a state in which a student develops a fear of the subject hindering learning. The BigMat platform was created specifically to address these issues.
“Mathematical literacy is one of the key prerequisites for accessing the modern tech economy. If we do not address this issue now, we will face the consequences in the future in the form of a shortage of specialists in product development, engineering and AI. This will have a significant impact on the competitiveness of the next generation,” said Sergey Tokarev.
How the platform works
BigMat is an app featuring interactive levels for pupils, ready-made teaching materials for teachers and tips for parents. It explains abstract mathematical concepts through everyday examples, calculating costs, making everyday decisions and so on. The main idea is not simply to raise students’ basic level of knowledge, but also to narrow the gap between those who find the subject easy and those for whom it is a real barrier.
“Together with Tokarev Foundation, we have created an educational platform for children that helps them understand complex topics in a simple and clear way. To achieve this, we selected real-life examples. The platform is currently at the MVP stage. We are launching a pilot to test the solution together with students, teachers and parents,” says EdEra CEO Illia Filipov.
What is already available on BigMat
The EdEra team has developed resources for eight topics on fractions, created eight interactive levels and prepared eight lessons. The platform is currently being tested in schools by 60 teachers together with their classes.
The second phase of the pilot is scheduled for autumn. Feedback from educators will then be taken into account, and the interactive lessons will be expanded to include new topics. In addition, there are plans to prepare tips for parents, which will help improve students’ math results without the need for private tutors.
