Erick Oved Estrada’s case explained: the charges, fentanyl deaths, guilty plea, and 2026 federal sentence.

Erick Oved Estrada is a Calabasas man who was federally prosecuted for operating a drug-delivery network involving fentanyl and other controlled substances. He pleaded guilty in October 2025 to two federal offenses involving controlled substances and death, and on August 6, 2026, a federal judge sentenced him to 324 months, or 27 years, in prison, followed by five years of supervised release.

Who Is Erick Oved Estrada?

Erick Oved Estrada is a California man whose name became widely associated with a federal narcotics case involving a same-day drug-delivery operation in Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

Federal authorities identified Estrada as also using the names “Franco Sanchez” and “Eric Freddy Hook.” The U.S. Department of Justice said the operation obtained drugs and supplied them to a network of delivery drivers, who then delivered them to customers or other distributors.

The case initially received attention because one of the deaths connected to the prosecution involved Cooper Noriega, a 19-year-old social-media personality whose death in 2022 was ruled an accidental overdose involving multiple substances, including fentanyl.

The important distinction is that the early case involved allegations, while the later proceedings resulted in guilty pleas and a federal judgment. That difference matters when reconstructing what actually happened.

Estrada was sentenced to 324 months in federal prison on August 6, 2026.

What Was Erick Oved Estrada Accused Of?

The original federal indictment described a broader alleged drug-trafficking operation than the two offenses that ultimately resulted in Estrada’s conviction.

When Estrada was arraigned in November 2023, prosecutors alleged that he operated a same-day delivery business involving cocaine and pills containing fentanyl. The indictment also charged him with additional drug-distribution and money-laundering offenses. At that stage, federal prosecutors explicitly emphasized that an indictment was only an allegation and that defendants were presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

The case subsequently changed substantially.

In October 2025, Estrada pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances resulting in death and one count of distribution of fentanyl resulting in death. The federal judgment later recorded convictions on those two counts, while the government dismissed numerous other counts from the original indictment.

That progression, from indictment to plea to judgment, is one of the easiest parts of the case to misunderstand when relying on older news reports.

How Did the Drug-Delivery Operation Work?

According to the Justice Department, the operation functioned through a network rather than requiring Estrada to personally make every delivery.

Federal prosecutors said that between May 2019 and March 2023, Estrada obtained narcotics, including cocaine and purported oxycodone pills containing fentanyl. Those drugs were then supplied to delivery drivers, who transported them to customers or other distributors and collected payment.

The description helps explain why authorities referred to it as a delivery service. The basic structure resembled a conventional delivery network in its logistics, orders, drivers, customers and payments, but involved illegal controlled substances rather than lawful consumer products.

The case also illustrates a particularly dangerous feature of counterfeit or illicit pills: a pill represented as a familiar prescription medication can contain a powerful synthetic opioid instead.

What Happened to Cooper Noriega?

Cooper Noriega was a 19-year-old TikTok personality who died in June 2022.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner determined that Noriega’s death resulted from the combined effects of fentanyl, alprazolam and lorazepam, and classified the death as an accident.

Federal prosecutors later connected Estrada’s drug operation to the circumstances surrounding Noriega’s death. According to the Justice Department’s 2026 account, Estrada sold 25 fentanyl-laced pills represented as oxycodone to co-defendant Arian Alani on June 8, 2022. Prosecutors said Alani subsequently sold some of those pills to the victim identified in court documents as “C.N.,” who died after ingesting them.

This is also where careful wording matters. Noriega’s medical examiner’s report and the federal criminal case are related pieces of evidence, but they answer different questions: the medical examiner established the medical cause of death, while the federal prosecution established criminal responsibility through the charges to which Estrada ultimately pleaded guilty.

Was There Another Death Connected to the Case?

Yes.

The federal sentencing record also concerns a second victim, identified in court documents as S.M. The Justice Department said that in March 2023, Estrada knowingly and intentionally distributed fentanyl to S.M. through his delivery operation. According to prosecutors, pills represented as Xanax and oxycodone were delivered to her, and she later suffered a fatal overdose.

The final judgment specifically identifies the second conviction as distribution of fentanyl resulting in death, aiding and abetting.

This second case is important because Estrada’s 2026 sentence was not based solely on the death associated with C.N. The judgment covered two separate federal counts involving deaths.

Erick Oved Estrada Case Timeline

DateDevelopment
May 2019–March 2023Federal prosecutors said Estrada obtained and distributed narcotics through a delivery network.
June 2022Prosecutors said Estrada supplied fentanyl-laced pills later sold to C.N., who died after ingesting them.
March 2023Prosecutors said fentanyl-containing pills were delivered to S.M., who subsequently died.
November 2023Estrada was arrested and arraigned on federal narcotics charges.
October 2025Estrada pleaded guilty to two federal offenses involving controlled substances, fentanyl and death.
August 6, 2026U.S. District Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald sentenced Estrada to 324 months in federal prison.
September 8, 2026The written judgment recorded the convictions, financial obligations and five years of supervised release following imprisonment.

What Was Erick Oved Estrada Sentenced To?

Estrada received a 324-month federal prison sentence, equivalent to 27 years.

The two 324-month terms were ordered to run concurrently, meaning they are served at the same time rather than consecutively. The judgment also imposed five years of supervised release after imprisonment.

The court’s written judgment recorded restitution totaling $43,145.98 across the two cases: $3,815.41 connected to C.N. and $39,330.57 connected to S.M. The Justice Department’s announcement rounded the figure to $43,145.

The judgment also states that the court waived fines because Estrada demonstrated an inability to pay and ordered forfeiture of property identified in the preliminary forfeiture order.

324 months equals 27 years, and the two prison terms were ordered to run concurrently.

What Were the Final Charges?

The final judgment is more useful than the original indictment for understanding Estrada’s legal status because it records the offenses for which he was actually convicted.

Final offenseWhat it means in this case
Conspiracy to distribute controlled substances resulting in deathEstrada pleaded guilty to participating in a conspiracy involving controlled substances where the offense resulted in death.
Distribution of fentanyl resulting in death, aiding and abettingEstrada was convicted for the fentanyl distribution offense involving the second fatal overdose.

The judgment cites federal statutes including 21 U.S.C. §§ 846, 841(a)(1), and 841(b)(1)(C) for the conspiracy count and 21 U.S.C. § 841(a)(1), § 841(b)(1)(C), and 18 U.S.C. § 2(a) for the fentanyl-distribution count.

That distinction also explains why some older articles contain a longer list of charges than newer reports. The indictment and final conviction are not the same document.

Why Fentanyl Was Central to the Case

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that can be extremely potent, and illicitly manufactured fentanyl has become a major driver of fatal overdoses in the United States.

The Estrada case demonstrates another risk: the contents of an illegally sold pill may differ dramatically from what the buyer believes they are purchasing. Federal prosecutors said the pills involved in this case were purported oxycodone or Xanax but contained fentanyl.

For families researching this case because of a fentanyl-related loss, that distinction is more than a legal technicality. It explains why investigators, prosecutors and medical examiners can separately discuss the substance involved, the medical cause of death and the chain of distribution.

Common Misunderstandings About the Case

Was Estrada convicted when he was arrested?

No.

He was arrested and charged in 2023. An indictment is an allegation, not a conviction. Estrada later pleaded guilty in October 2025, and the federal court entered judgment in 2026.

Was the original indictment the final set of convictions?

No.

The original indictment contained substantially more charges, including additional drug-distribution and money-laundering allegations. The final judgment reflects two convictions, with the remaining specified counts dismissed.

Did the sentence amount to 27 years on top of another 27-year sentence?

No.

The judgment imposed 324 months on each of the two counts, but specifically ordered the terms to run concurrently. In practical terms, the imprisonment term is 324 months, or 27 years.

Was Cooper Noriega’s death the only death involved?

No.

Federal prosecutors said the Estrada case involved two fatal overdoses, with the victims identified in court records as C.N. and S.M. Public reporting has connected C.N. with Cooper Noriega, while the second victim was identified in the court documents by initials.

What Happened to Estrada After Sentencing?

As of the September 2026 written judgment, Estrada is committed to the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons for the 324-month term.

The judgment also provides for five years of supervised release after imprisonment. Among the conditions are restrictions on controlled substances and requirements relating to drug testing and treatment during supervised release.

Because federal sentences can involve credit for time already spent in custody and other administrative calculations, the sentence length should not automatically be treated as an exact future release date.

Estrada had been in federal custody since November 2023, according to the Justice Department.

What This Case Shows About Criminal Proceedings

The most useful way to understand the Erick Oved Estrada case is to separate allegations, evidence, pleas and judgments.

An indictment tells readers what prosecutors alleged. A guilty plea establishes what the defendant admitted in court. A sentencing judgment then records the offenses of conviction and the punishment imposed.

That framework prevents a common mistake in fast-moving criminal cases: treating every allegation from the earliest stage as though it remained part of the final conviction.

The Estrada case changed materially between November 2023 and August 2026. What began as a large federal indictment eventually resulted in guilty pleas to two counts and a 27-year sentence.
